Bring decorative pieces to life with flashy colors and lively crackles when you move them from the red-hot kiln to the combustion chamber where the Raku magic begins. Students should bring six to eight pieces—made of Raku clay, bisque fired, and no larger than a cantaloupe—to glaze before heading to the kiln. Pieces made with even thickness and strong attachments will handle the shocking transformation best.
Note: Students will not have access to NCC’s open studio time unless they are already enrolled in a ten-week spring class at NCC.

In this class, students learn how to read a simple pick up chart and weave a cotton band displaying distinct motifs. Depending on the length of the woven band students will make a lanyard, key chain, or bookmark.
During the class, students will weave as much as they can within the allotted class time. Class looms may be checked out by individuals willing to return looms and materials to the instructor at an agreed-upon location within 2 weeks of class. Assistance in finishing bands is only available during class or when meeting at the instructor’s home in Andover, MN.

[more+]Join local herbalist Heather Mashuga on a leisurely walk through the woods, noticing and admiring the multitudes of wildflowers and plants. Discover how to learn to use these plant allies to provide nourishment and healing.
Herbal medicine focuses on herbs to prevent and treat illness and promote health and has been used for centuries by diverse cultures, including Native Americans to people in China, India, and Nepal.
Heather holds this foraging opportunity monthly, April through October. The walk will highlight different plants depending upon time of year, growth and the parts used from each plant. You will learn to make and decant tinctures (herbal remedies taken internally) as well as salves (topical, for use on such things as bee stings, rashes, and scratches), depending upon the plants available each month.
Each month, respectful harvesting of plants and plant parts will be reviewed, plus where to find seasonal plants and safe techniques for producing herbal remedies.
Students are reminded to dress for the weather and to plan on walking about 1.5 hours, with about 30 minutes of inside class time. Class may be postponed if there is heavy rain.
