Discussion will include a brief overview of Italian wine production in order to understand how the island wines fit into the bigger picture. We'll taste classic examples of both white and red wines from both islands to truly connect grape to glass.

Allison came to wine as a second career about nine years ago. She’s been passionate about food her entire life, and growing up thought she’d be a chef or a food writer. After graduate school, she found herself working in operations at a small tech start-up in San Francisco. While there, she started exploring northern California wine regions. Her love for food grew to encompass wine as well, and the rest, as they say, is history. She’s created a niche working in unique wine regions around the United States (Texas Hill Country, historic Livermore, CA, and now Minnesota) and specializes in hospitality for boutique, family-owned wineries. Equally passionate about wine writing and education, she regularly writes freelance articles and teaches WSET courses. When not studying for her next wine certification, Allison enjoys travel, cooking, kayaking, and hiking with her lab mix, Cabbie.

We had so much fun with the Giro d'Italia in May, we wanted to sip through another epic bike race through the lens of the world's third largest wine producer: Spain.

Spain has a fascinating wine history. It is really only in the past few decades we have seen more artisan productions sprout up along with a mission to reclaim and restore old vineyards and indigenous grapes. We will discuss this and taste a good mix of classic regions as well as some of the more exciting new areas that are gaining the attention of the world. Spain offers a wide range of grapes, terrain, traditions, and styles. We cannot wait to take you through Portugal (the race does, in fact, actually start there), Galicia, Bierzo, Rioja, Madrid, and Andalusia. You will be tasting a range of whites, reds, rose, and sparkling selections.

Of course, this will all be to the backdrop of the Vuelta -- Spain's famous world tour cycling race. We will be tasting through areas where the Vuelta will be going through -- we will be sharing maps, race itineraries, and learning about the race's history, route, and the regions selected for the 2024 race.

"Marquette was introduced in 2006 by the University of Minnesota. It is known as a disease resistant red grape variety that produces medium-bodied, dry, red wine and is suitable for extended maturation in oak barrels. Over time, it has become one of the most popular grapes adapted to cold climates." - U of M website

Over the course of decades, the University of Minnesota has developed numerous cold hardy hybrid grapes, crossing native American grapes with European varieties to make something delicious. Marquette is considered to be the premium of these cold hardy red wine grapes.

How much do you know about this Minnesota grape? This is an excellent opportunity to take an in-depth look at Marquette and explore questions like: What is a hybrid grape? Let's explore the link between it and Pinot Noir, which is an important part of Marquette's genetic makeup. We'll look at the various styles produced of both wines and discuss Marquette's potential in the growing Minnesota wine industry. You will taste a couple classic Pinots alongside 3 very different styles of Marquette. It's a fascinating class!

Allison Sheardy holds all kinds of wine certifications and is currently pursuing the prestigious Master of Wine credential. She works at a local winery (Rustic Roots) and can't wait to share her knowledge and passion for Marquette with you.

Participate in gravestone cleaning and learn the most common safe & effective repair techniques! A discussion on historic preservation will begin the day with a short walk and talk tour, visually surveying some of the most historic gravestones and monuments in need of repair. Safe & effective removal of biological activity w/ approved stone cleaners & graffiti removal + prevention. HANDS ON! Adopt a stone and perform the cleaning process yourself. The most common repair techniques will be discussed and performed including resetting a badly leaning or sunken tablet stone and joining broken gravestone fragments using epoxy, clamps, and bracing techniques. *If time allows* we will employ an overhead, lifting tripod and demonstrate how to rig and lift monuments safely. *If time allows* we will review materials required and the process involved in replacing eroded or lost stone with the use of a stone infill material, including preparation, application and curing of mortars.

How to Prepare:

We recommend bringing water, snacks and any other essentials you feel that you may need. For example, a chair for breaks, hat, sunscreen, etc. We recommend wearing closed toe shoes and appropriate clothing if planning to participate.

Bicycling offers an ideal pace to examine the landscape thoroughly, but still cover a large area. You’ll not just see these features, you’ll feel them as you alternately climb and descend, mostly on low-traffic roads and paths. The route includes the deep valley of the St. Croix River valley and the flat terraces on its shoulders, exposures of ancient bedrock as we climb out of the valley, a rolling terrain of features related to sediment deposited by glaciers and subsequently eroded by their meltwater, discussion of groundwater resources and lakes, and finally, a sweet glide back into the valley.

Participants will be required to wear a helmet and to follow safe riding practices that will be discussed prior to departure. Make sure your bike is in good working order as no mechanical support is provided. E-bikes are welcome.

Students are asked to bring:
