[more+]These can be used as a child’s toy or toy for a cat. It’s a great way to use those colorful bits of yarn in your stash.
Archival evidence from museums in Sweden indicates that the craft started around the early 1800s. Singlade bollar have been found in southern Sweden, Denmark, and northern Germany. The craft is likely to have been spread throughout the region via the Baltic Sea trade route.
Kate Sterner learned this handicraft from her Danish grandfather and has created a website dedicated to preserving and furthering this craft. Join Kate and have fun keeping a tradition alive.
Skill level: Beginner.
Student Age: 16 years and over.
Supplies needed: Scissors, a sharp, large-eye, 3-inch darning needle (or purchase one from Kate for $1), and worsted weight, 4-ply wool yarn in as many colors as you want. Kate also will have plenty of colors of yarn from her own stash to use in class.
Note: Students should not expect to complete the project in this time. However, Kate will teach students what they need to complete their Singlade Balls at home. (Normally a ball takes about 6-8 hours to make.)
Class Size: Limited to 4 students.
Cancellation Policy: Up to 3 weeks before the event – 50% refund. Under 3 weeks before the event, no refunds.
INSTRUCTOR INFORMATION
Kate Sterner’s Danish grandfather taught her how to make singlade balls (singlade bollar) when she was 10 or 11 years old. He learned from his mother while he was a boy in Denmark and enjoyed passing the craft down to the next generation. Though several of her cousins learned the craft from their grandfather, Kate is the one who kept making singlade balls throughout the years, teaching others who found the balls intriguing.
SWEDISH PRONUNCIATION
Singlade, pronounced: sing’ la deh. Singlade is a Swedish word that has a couple of meanings. The base of the verb is “singla,” meaning to toss or fling. However, in this case, the verb describes the embroidery technique used to stitch these balls. So, you “singla” a ball.

[more+]In this course, you will be fully immersed in the world of kuksa carving — the ultimate wooden drinking cup. The goal of the workshop is to build a relationship with each of the tools we will be using while gaining an understanding of how they work in relation to the timber itself.
This is a great course aimed at both beginners and more experienced wood carvers. We will be swinging axes and adzes, and using specialty gouges, hook tools, and the humble, but versatile, sloyd knife. This is a very unique opportunity because you will be learning to safely use such a large array of tools while developing techniques which bridge the gap between spoon and bowl carving.
The course will cover just about all you need to know, including sourcing wood, designing your own cups, learning various knife and tool grips, innovative ways to use tools, decorative carving and painting, learning Alex’s unique and advanced hollowing techniques. We will even discuss tool maintenance.
*Note: This class takes place over two days: Saturday, October 19 and Sunday, October 20, from 9 a.m.-5 p.m.
Some specialty bespoke adzes and gouges will be used. In addition, some lovely green wood will be provided that you will transform from raw material to a fine drinking vessel by the end of the course.
The goal of this workshop is to gain confidence in yourself and the tools being used. By the end of the course, you will have all of the knowledge and skills needed to start crafting your own unique cups that will get passed down from generation to generation.
Alex will be bringing his collection of wooden cups to use as design examples, as well as some freshly carved kuksas he will have for sale.
Your instructor will provide:
Adze
Hook knives
Sloyd knives
Axes
Students will have access to the instructor’s tools if needed.
Students are asked to bring:
Hook knife or gouge
Axe
Sloyd knife (Mora 106)
Pruning saw
Pencil
Ruler
Compass or dividers
Carving gloves or work gloves
Students can find these items online.
Age Requirement
Students ages 18 and older are welcome to attend this class.
Skill Level
No experience needed.

You will learn basic rib basket-making techniques. Thoughts on this basket:
This basket is not very big but provides you with all the instruction to make ribbed baskets today and in the future
This basket will be a prerequisite for the Potato Basket which will be taught later! (more on that to follow)
Making a ribbed basket is different from making a flat reed basket!
*This class runs over two days:
Saturday, October 26 (9:30-3) and Sunday, October 27 (9:30-noon)
You will work hard during this class but the outcome will be well worth it. There is truly something magical about taking basic supplies from nature and making a functional work of art. You will love this class!

Wooden clothespins (at least 15)

Carving gloves or work gloves
Students can find these items online.

[more+]Join Kirsten, a student-favorite experienced instructor who will have you laughing and learning, she’ll help you ease into basket weaving with no stress, you’ll be amazed at how fast the time goes.
The instructor will provide all weaving supplies.

Bucket (at least ice cream bucket size or larger)
Wooden clothespins (at least 15)
Strong scissors
