Intro to Stillwater Historic Building Research

Stillwater's Heritage Preservation Commission Chair Matt Thueson will provide an introduction to historic building research in Stillwater. We will look at some of the most useful research sources such as historic land and tax records, building permits, newspapers, photos, and neighborhood studies commissioned by the Heritage Preservation Commission. In this hands-on workshop you’ll complete 2–3 votive luminaries while learning the essentials of pattern design, clay prep, and beautiful surface finishes. What you will learn: Designing a pattern: Sketching repeat motifs, mapping positive/negative space, and transferring designs to your pots. Clay knowledge & consistency: Understanding clay stages (from soft to leather-hard), ideal timing for carving, and tips to prevent cracks. Carving techniques: Piercing, incising, and sgraffito for crisp lines and luminous cutouts—plus wall-thickness and safety considerations.
