Creating Sacred Spaces
Presented by Treehaus Studio at Treehaus Studio Osceola, WI
In this workshop, you will design and hand-build your own altar, which will serve as the focal point of your sacred space. Before you begin crafting your altar, choose a quiet, clean area in your home or studio where it can remain undisturbed, such as a corner or a small table. Bring measurements of your space so we can design our altars to fit seamlessly into your designated area. It's essential to clearly define the purpose of your healing altar. Consider whether it is intended for physical, emotional, or spiritual healing for yourself or a loved one. You may choose to focus on the overall concept of healing or dedicate the altar to a specific ailment or situation. Once you've set your intentions, consider adding additional symbolic objects, such as candles, tea, stones, soil, feathers, bells, or offerings like flowers or clean water. The "Creating Sacred Spaces" workshop consists of two in-studio sessions at Treehaus Studio. The first session is for designing and hand-building your altar, while the second session will focus on glazing or painting. The studio will also be open for anyone who needs extra time to complete their altar.

Tour of private prairie
Presented by The Prairie Enthusiasts, St. Croix Valley Chapter at Bouthilet prairie Osceola, WI
Alex Bouthilet will lead us on a tour of his prairie. This prairie started as a dense sod of exotic cool-season grasses. About 12 years ago it was inter-seeded with native prairie species and has been burned annually in the dormant season since then. During the tour we’ll look at how repeated fire and inter-seeding have gradually shifted the site toward a more diverse native prairie, along with what has worked well and what challenges still remain.

The Fight to Save America’s Prairie — A Public Talk in the St. Croix Valley
Presented by The Prairie Enthusiasts, St. Croix Valley Chapter at Memorial Lutheran Church Afton, MN
A quiet tragedy is unfolding on the American prairie: We are plowing up the continent’s remaining grasslands at the rate of roughly 1 million acres a year— nearly as fast as we are destroying the Amazon rainforest. This is a disaster for wildlife, climate change, clean water and the lakes and rivers of the heartland. But across the prairie many beacons of hope are emerging. In Minnesota, Montana and other states, conservation groups are restoring and re-wilding large grassland expanses. There is even hope in Washington: the American Grasslands Conservation Act would reward farmers, ranchers and other landowners for preserving healthy grasslands. Yet prairie enthusiasts are battling some of the mightiest forces in America: Agrochemical conglomerates that profit from row-crop agriculture; commodity lobbyists who fiercely defend federal subsidies that drive the plow; a food industry built on endless supplies of cheap corn and soybeans. In the 19th century we lost 99 percent of the tall-grass prairie to the plow. Today, can we save the great grassland expanses that remain? Our Speakers Dave Hage Independent Journalist Dave Hage oversaw environmental and health reporting at the Minneapolis Star Tribune for a dozen years, editing projects that won a Pulitzer Prize and an Edward R. Murrow Award, among other honors. His previous books include No Retreat, No Surrender: Labor’s War at Hormel, and Reforming Welfare by Rewarding Work.
