Upcycle: Soft Sculpture

Step into a world of creativity at our lively workshop, designed to spark your imagination and help you make something truly unique! Discover hands-on techniques for crafting soft sculptures as you experiment with shape, color, and texture. Whether you prefer hand sewing or want to bring your own sewing machine, you’ll find plenty of inspiration and support. We’ll provide a variety of textiles, but feel free to bring your favorite non-stretch cotton fabrics to add your personal touch. What is Soft sculpture? A great 3D art form using flexible materials like fabric, foam, felt, or rubber, rather than traditional hard materials like stone or metal. Pioneered by artists like local favorite Claes Oldenburg in the 1960s, whose works often featured everyday objects, rendered in a soft, sagging, or stuffed manner. Claes was responsible for the beloved Spoonbridge and Cherry in the Walker Sculpture Garden. Common techniques include sewing, stuffing, draping, and weaving. Join us on May 28, 2026 for poetry and community! Arrow Broken Poetry Collective is honored to welcome Teresa Peterson as our featured artist. Teresa Peterson, Utuhu Cistinna Win, is Sisseton Wahpeton Dakota and citizen of the Upper Sioux Community. Teresa earned her doctorate from the University of Minnesota Duluth. She is the author of Perennial Ceremony: Lessons and Gifts from a Dakota Garden and Grasshopper Girl, and co-author of Voices from Pejuhutazizi: Dakota Stories and Storytellers with her uncle “Super” LaBatte. Her passion is digging in her garden that overlooks the Mni Sota River valley and feeding friends and family. The free event will begin at 7:00 p.m. and will be held at the The Village Hall in Marine on St Croix. Open Mic will begin at 8:30 p.m. Everyone is invited to share their work and will be allotted three minutes to perform. May’s theme is Wóohoda/Oho’da–Respect. The Dakọta view the land as their relative. The land has shaped Dakọta people. When we understand that the land and all the creatures that live on the land, in the air, and water offer us gifts, and we act responsibly towards these relatives, then we demonstrate respect. Birding By Sound on the St. Croix Paddle

Are you wild about birds? Join us for a morning on the wild and scenic St. Croix River listening and looking for spring migrants making their way north. We’ll search the skies, riparian zone, and waters for Great blue heron, green heron, belted kingfisher, bald eagle, swallows, osprey, and more. This fully supported paddle will provide an educational aspect to bird identification by sound. Meet your Wild Rivers Conservancy Paddle Guides! Owen has been planning and leading events as the Outdoor Program Coordinator at the Conservancy since 2024. Previously he has worked as an outdoor guide leading canoe and backpacking expeditions throughout North America, and as an adaptive ski instructor in the mountains of Colorado. He is a certified Wilderness First Responder and trained in risk management for a multitude of outdoor settings. October is the Conservancy's Outdoor Program Specialist and an avid outdoorsman throughout the midwest. He has been kayaking and fishing since his youth, and adventured up and down the coast from Washington to Alaska. He now resides in the St. Croix valley and has years of experience guiding throughout his favorite places along the Riverway. Details: This is a fully supported paddle. Embroidered Needlebook Craft Workshop

There are hundreds of stitch variations. Using different threads – silk vs. wool vs. cotton vs. synthetics – produces different looks. Once you become familiar with the basic stitches, you can make your own embroidered needle book to store needles for your next project.
