Art of the Stamp at Afton State Park

Art of the Stamp celebrates the impactful history of the Postal Service in America’s democracy. This year ArtReach St. Croix’s Mobile Art Gallery is filled with original artworks, a “stamp collection” of sorts. ArtReach is pleased to tour the work of 17 artists: Leslie Batt-Lutz, Wynn Davis, Thomas J. Dent, Gil Gragert, Deanna Grigus, Bifidus Jones, John Kaul, Ruth Thompson-Klabunde, Nicholas Markell, Craig Parent, Rebeckah Regennitter, Sue Rowe, Judy Sell, Wesley Shaver, Syndie Sorensen, Juniper Winn & JRC. Art of the Stamp highlights the role of stamps as a powerful method of public art distribution. Bird Hike at Lake Elmo Park Reserve

Whether you’re a beginner or experienced birder, these hikes are a great way to get outdoors, listen to the sounds of nature, and learn to identify the birds that call the St. Croix Valley home. Participants also have the opportunity to contribute to citizen science data collection by completing bird count surveys with your guide. The surveys collected will assist our Natural Resources team and related work in conjunction with the Lessard-Sams Outdoor Heritage Fund grant.

Flower Photography Workshop

Photographer Jean Maher will be sharing tips on how to capture intricate and interesting perspectives of flowers that bloom throughout the growing season, sometimes along with the small visitors that land on them. The workshop is being offered in conjunction with the Friends of the St. Croix Management District's Season of Wild photography contest, underway now. The workshop is geared toward amateur photographers and young (10-16 yrs.) photographers. Workshop participants qualify for a 50% discount off the submission fee when they enter images into the contest.

Guided paddle: Writing the River
Presented by St. Croix 360 at Paddlefish Adventures Saint Croix Falls, WI
There have been generations of writers who have spent a lot of ink describing the St. Croix. Helen McCann White, Charles Roos, James Taylor Dunn, and many more have documented the river’s history, nature, and the sheer joy of spending time on it. There are also many contemporary authors, poets, advocates, historians, and journalists who write about the river. Learn about these writers and hear some favorite excerpts. Discuss some of the unique ways they used language to describe and evoke the St. Croix’s special qualities and stories. (Take home a booklet with samples of rare writings about the river.) “Layers of St. Croix History” trips will offer a relaxing paddle down the river as Greg Seitz shares stories about unique aspects of the river’s past. These seven-mile trips will take you past geologic features, natural wonders, and important places for human history. While each trip will highlight a specific historic theme, we will also look for birds, fish, mussels, flowers, and other wildlife that are part of the river’s past, present, and future.

In this hands-on class, we aren’t just drawing—we are carving using the ancient technique of sgraffito. You will learn how to build up layers of oil pastel and then scratch to reveal the vibrant colors hidden below. This class is a bit messy, so an old t-shirt or an apron is recommended. We’ll be creating lots of little "pastel crumbs" as we scratch our way to a masterpiece!
