Heart Mountain Japanese Internment Camp & Interpretative Center
Presented by Stillwater Public Library at Stillwater Public Library Stillwater, MN
Allen Rapacz will give a talk about the bombing of Pearl Harbor and subsequent internment of Japanese Americans, focusing on the Heart Mountain Japanese Internment Camp where Japanese-Americans were detained during World War II. At its height Heart Mountain detained 10,767 people and 14,000 Japanese-American internees passed through the camp during the roughly 3 years that it operated. Surrounded by barbed wire and 9 guard towers, the camp was an imposing detention center far from the coastal Californian and Washington homes of the people sent there. Currently the site is home to the Heart Mountain Interpretive Center, which tells the stories of the detained Japanese-Americans and preserves this moment of the country's history to educate future generations. Allen Rapacz, a 1982 graduate of North Dakota State University, began his architectural career with Foss Architects in the Fargo Moorhead region of North Dakota and Minnesota. In October 1982, he relocated to Billings, Montana, where he helped establish and operate the firm’s branch office. In 1986, Schutz Foss Architects (SFA) was formed and has since grown into a respected regional architectural design firm. Licensed in Montana, Wyoming, Colorado, Kansas, Idaho, Iowa, Minnesota, Nebraska, North Dakota, South Dakota, and Utah, the firm provides a broad range of design services, including civic, healthcare, liturgical, and residential projects.
