Artist Reception: Suyao Tian

Art Gallery Exhibition This fall, Belwin is hosting a gallery exhibition, Worlds Within Worlds, featuring the work of painter Suyao Tian. In this exhibition, Suyao Tian will presents a series of abstract, water-based paintings that respond to the natural rhythms and quiet presence of Belwin. Worlds Within Worlds is ultimately about connection — between visible and invisible realities, between humans and nonhuman life, between imagination and memory, and between the intimate and the infinite. Every system, being, memory, landscape, or form contains another hidden world inside it — layered, interconnected, and continuously unfolding. Suyao Tian’s artistic language is deeply shaped by her childhood experiences growing up as a single child during China’s one-child policy in the 1980s. “Cultural expectations and a highly competitive, exam-oriented education system emphasized memorization over critical thinking and imagination, affecting both school and family life for an entire generation. For me, the absence of siblings, the inability to have pets, and limited social interaction led to isolation and a lack of confidence. Nature became my primary source of communication and emotional expression. As a child, I spent time collecting small insects, placing them in jars, talking to them, and playing with them—they became my earliest listeners.” This exhibition will be on view at Belwin's Savanna Center at 795 Indian Trail S. Exploring Cut Paper in 2-D and 3-D
Presented by Belwin Conservancy at Belwin Savanna Center Afton, MN
Bring: A few of your own sketches (preferably) of natural entities or artifacts (from Visual Insights in Nature workshop, or your own studies); or a few of your own photos (printed). We'll also have other natural artifacts available from which to sketch. NOTE: Attendees may bring photos or pick a leaf from outside for this class if they don’t have a sketch, but it will be better for the class schedule to use a pre-drawn image. Materials: All materials will be provided. However, you may bring your own if you prefer: a craft knife that uses #11 blades (X-acto, Excel, or similar); a cutting surface; a straight-edge ruler; your favorite cutting paper; tracing paper; a bone folder. Required Capabilities: Focus and hand-eye coordination to work safely with sharp tools. Age Limits: 16 yrs and older; 12 - 15 with an adult partner. This course is led by Vera Ming Wong. As a Natural Science Illustrator and Artist with Project Art for Nature, Vera strives to inspire conservation of nature through art. Drawing directly from nature is the root of her own pen-&-ink, watercolor and cut paper images. Lester Batiste: Featured Author and Open Mic (Theme: Wóokiya—Being Helpful)

Join us on September 24, 2026 for poetry and community! Arrow Broken Poetry Collective is honored to welcome Lester Batiste as our featured artist. Lester Batiste is a savage writer in living color who writes for political, social, economic change and Black futures. Born in Chicago, IL, he holds an MFA from the University of Southern Maine's Stonecoast writing program, and an M.S.Ed. from the University of Pennsylvania. Influenced by Gwendolyn Brooks, Carl Sandburg, and Toni Morrison, Lester strives to weave traditional forms and techniques with the vibrancy of African American experience and speech. Rich details are enhanced by the musical tones from Lester’s childhood on the Southside of Chicago to his present on the Northside of Minneapolis. Lester's work has appeared in print in The Stone House Anthology (2014), the Southern Griot Journal (2012), Tulane Review (2017), A Garden of Black Joy (2020), and digitally in the Brushfire Literary and Arts Journal (2020), Hidden Peak Press (2022), The Indianapolis Review (2023), and The Bitchin’ Kitsch (2023). In 2025, he received the BIPOC Emerging Writer award from Blue Earth Review. Lester’s debut poetry collection, Angel and Night’s Youngest, is forthcoming with the Black Spring Press Group (UK). Author Talk and Book Signing – Eric Dregni “Vikings in the Attic”

Hear author Eric Dregni make a presentation about writing his book, Vikings in the Attic: In Search of Nordic America. In his book, Eric tracks down and explores the significant — often bizarre — historic sites, tales, and traditions of Scandinavia’s peculiar colony in the Midwest. Eric reveals the little-known tales that lie beneath the surface of Nordic America and proves by example why generations of Scandinavian-Americans have come to love and cherish these tales and traditions so dearly. After the presentation, Eric will be available for signing copies of his book which are available for purchase in the museum’s gift shop, the Scandia Butik. Eric Dregni is an associate professor of English at Concordia University in St. Paul. He is the author of several books, including Midwest Marvels (2006), In Cod We Trust: Living the Norwegian Dream (2008), and Never Trust a Thin Cook (2009), all published by the University of Minnesota Press. During the summer, he is the dean of the Italian Concordia Language Village in northern Minnesota. He lives in Minneapolis.
