Create a Kjolväskor (Skirt Pocket or Purse) with Natalie Norman

This two-day class with Natalie Norman focuses on making a kjolväskor (a skirt pocket or purse) featuring appliqué and embroidered designs. Swedish kjolväskor were part of the Swedish folk dräkt (folk dress) and were used to carry oats or salt so the cows would follow the herder home. Today, they may hold a cell phone or car keys. This practical decorative bag serves as a reminder of heritage and as a focal point of beauty, as it carries your belongings Suggested Age: 15 years old to adult. The class fee of $135 includes the $25 materials fee. The materials fee includes: – Fabric and lining – Felt – Embroidery floss – Pattern – 1 needle Register on EventBrite to guarantee your spot! Please note: The 8-hour class is divided between two days: October 3rd, 5 1/2 hours, 10:15 am – 3:45 pm October 4th, 2 1/2 hours, 1:15 pm – 3:45 pm Natalie Norman has been part of the cultural needlework community for over 20 years, participating as a vendor, demonstrator, and teacher at venues such as Gammelgården Museum, American Swedish Institute, and Marine Mills Folk School. Sponsored by the Swedish Embassy in Washington, DC, her embroidered work was featured in a traveling exhibition that visited five major American cities and concluded with a 15-month tour in Stockholm, Sweden. In 2019, Natalie received a fellowship from the American Scandinavian Foundation to study a traditional form of folk art. Nature Fest

This community event celebrates the Kinnickinnic River watershed! We are leveling up the excitement this year with live music, food trucks, arts and crafts, river ecology station, fly fishing casting lessons, and much more! The river ecology station gives you the opportunity to dip your feet in the Kinni and learn more about the aquatic insects, fish, and plants that call this beautiful river home! Included this year is EDDY, the new mobile education van, which is a partnership between the National Park Service and Wild Rivers Conservancy. Osprey Wilds animal ambassadors will be back at the event along with the Friends of the Willow River and Kinnickinnic State Park! Steen Metz is a Holocaust survivor who dedicates his time to sharing his harrowing childhood experiences to promote tolerance and combat prejudice. Arrested in Denmark at age 8, he survived the Theresienstadt Concentration Camp. This is a virtual event and registration is required. Bird Hike at Pine Point Regional Park

Whether you’re a beginner or experienced birder, these hikes are a great way to get outdoors, listen to the sounds of nature, and learn to identify the birds that call the St. Croix Valley home. Participants also have the opportunity to contribute to citizen science data collection by completing bird count surveys with your guide. The surveys collected will assist our Natural Resources team and related work in conjunction with the Lessard-Sams Outdoor Heritage Fund grant.
